Pedro’s Judo Center proudly announces its remarkable performance at the 2023 New England Judo Championships, hosted at St. John’s Prep High School in Danvers, Massachusetts. With 65 dedicated athletes spanning various age divisions, Pedro’s Judo Center secured an impressive total of 22 GOLD, 17 SILVER, and 11 BRONZE medals.
Leading the charge for Pedro’s Judo Center was Pedro’s Judo Center Manager Sensei Riley McIlwain and Pedro’s Judo Jr/Sr Competition Team Coach Sensei Tyler Yonemori, whose guidance assisted in the team’s success. With their help, their student’s hard work was evident throughout the tournament, inspiring as each of them rose above to reach new heights.
“I am so incredibly proud of the team’s performance at the New Englands,” said McIlwain. “Sensei Tyler has been working furiously to ensure all of the students are prepared and feel confident leading up to this tournament. Ultimately, we had a lot of recreational and first-timers participating and really we couldn’t be happier! Students listened to their coach, kept their emotions balanced, and fought to win – what more can I ask for as a coach?”, concluded McIlwain.
The event witnessed the presence of distinguished guests, further enhancing the prestige of the 2023 New England Judo Championships. Notable figures included 2-time Olympic Medalist and Judo Canada CEO Nicolas Gill, accompanied by his wife, Canadian Olympian Marie-Hélène Chisholm. Additionally, the event featured the esteemed 2-time Canadian Olympian Kelita Zupancic-Stevens, US Olympic Coach and 1988 US Olympian Steve Cohen, and US Olympic Judo Coach Jim Pedro Sr. Their attendance underscored the significance of this competition within the Judo community.
This year marked the 9th consecutive year of the New England Judo Championships, and it proved to be the largest and most exhilarating edition yet. With nearly 200 skilled athletes hailing from various corners of the northeastern United States, the event was a testament to the growing passion for Judo in the region.
Over the course of the day, there were more than 200 intense matches that showcased the incredible talent and dedication of Pedro’s Judo Center’s students. The athletes displayed outstanding skill, sportsmanship, and determination, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance.
Pedro’s Judo Center extends its heartfelt gratitude to the event organizers, participants, spectators, and the entire Judo community for their support and enthusiasm. The team looks forward to building on this remarkable success and continuing to promote the values of discipline, respect, and excellence that Judo embodies.
