Pan-American Junior Championships
Pedro’s Judo Center (Wakefield, Massachusetts) athletes Katherinne Lieby (-57kg) and Devin Leggett (-73kg) competed in Villa Carlos Paz, Argentina at the Pan-American Junior Championships.
Fighting in arguably one of the most difficult junior weight classes, Leggett fell to eventual bronze medalist in his first round. Devin Leggett of Lynnfield, MA went 0-2 at the tournament. This event was Leggett’s first international judo team qualification. He is now setting his sights on the U.S. Open coming this July.
Lieby for Bronze
Katherinne Lieby of Wakefield, MA lost her first match of the day to Ecuador and fell down to the repechage bracket early off. After winning three matches in a row against Uruguay, Argentina, and Venezuela, Lieby earned herself a bronze medal. After the competition, Lieby commented on her overall performance, “It was unfortunate that I lost my first match but I was able to come back. It was nice to finish my last Junior Pan-Ams with a medal.”
Two-time Olympic bronze medalist and Team Force head coach Jimmy Pedro commented on Lieby’s performance, “I know Katherinne was sick leading up to and during this competition. I am glad she was able to fight back and take home a medal.”
